ACTIVITY
1: BRAINSTORMING ABOUT THE TOPIC.
The teacher introduces
students to the key concepts of the sub topic such as definition of expository,
expository writing, and expository essay.
By definition, Expository writing is the type of
writing that is used to explain, describe and give information on a particular
topic.
An expository essay is the type of essay that requires the student to
investigate the topic, evaluate the supporting evidences, explain the topic,
and put the details of the whole explanation in a concise and clear manner.
When writing an expository
composition, the writer should not assume that the readers know what he/she
wants to present. Thus, the writer should use details and organisation so that
the readers can fully understand the content of the composition.
The teacher discusses with the students on these important concepts and
emphasize that factual writing involves writing of the actual things.
The Expository essay can be
accomplished through various details and skills like;
- Definitions to clarify the terms,
- Moderate use of examples,
- Comparison and contrast, and
- The analysis of cause and effect,

FEATURES
OF A GOOD EXPOSITORY ESSAY
A teacher can also discuss
with the students the features of a good expository essay. These features are
helpful when they start writing their expository essays in the coming
activities:
Features of a good expository
essay.
- An expository essay should have a clear thesis statement. This is the clear information given in the first paragraph of the essay. It is also called an introduction of an essay.
- An expository essay should also have clear transitions between the introduction, main body and the conclusion. This means, a good expository essay is the essay that shows clear connections between parts by using clear transitional words or conjunctions. You can always down load a sample essay to see how transitions are used in an essay or click How Essays are Well-Connected together to see how transitions are used to connect an essay together.
- Supporting evidences. A good essay has body paragraphs that include clear evidences that support the explained points. Without supporting evidences and examples the essay looks like an empty vessel.
- An essay should also be creative. A student should attempt to write an essay that will impress the readers and leave everlasting impression.
- A good conclusion of an essay should not only restate the explained points but also readdress the matter according to the evidences provided.
ACTIVITY
2: SELECTING THE TOPIC AND WRITING THE FIRST DRAFT.
At this point, the teacher guides
students to select topics available. Under teacher’s guidance, the students
discuss and select various topics such as causes of poverty, gender and
violence, conflict resolution, and types of road accidents. The teacher should
make sure that he/she leads a discussion so that the students cannot pick
irrelevant topics. After discussing various topics and selecting the topic to
write on, the students can now write the first draft in their pairs or groups.
An example of the topic
selected may be CAUSES OF CORRUPTION. Follow this link Teacher's
Sample to check Teacher’s sample. Or see an example below:
As students write their first
draft in pairs or groups, the teacher should move around and assist students
where necessary.
ACTIVITY
3: EDITING THE FIRST DRAFT
At this stage, students in
their pairs or group, can revise and edit their works focusing on the content
of the topic, correct spelling, checking if they have followed parts of a good
essay, and mechanical errors.
ACTIVITY
4: POSTING THE WORKS ON THE WALLS FOR DISPLAY.
As part of their motivation,
post the students’ compositions on the wall for others to visit and read. These
compositions should be those that are the best of all!
6: CONNECTION: Beyond the Sub Topic. This sub topic is the topic
that is special for helping students master the expository writing skills, the
skills that help students write factual information.
7: NOTE: This sub topic is taught effectively when students are actively
involved in writing activities. They should be taught how essay composition is organized
and how the content is delivered.
This type of essay is
commonly used as a tool for classroom assessment, and it is also found in
various examination formats. Thus, the teachers are strongly advised to guide
their students to follow the correct formats of writing various kinds of essays
including the expository essay.
