STUDENT DEVELOPMENT CLUB #18: Why Do We Say a Student Has 75% in Learning Process?

Hello teachers,
I am happy to share with you this piece of information. It’s something about our students especially why we believe we should help and guide our students in a better way. Although there are other teachers’ duties to students, it’s still undeniable that a teacher has a specific time of teaching students. For example, whenever a teacher leaves the class, students have always something to do. When a teacher spends 40 minutes teaching in the class, for instance, on the other hand, students may spend more time doing assignments and sometimes home works. Below are the differences which prove that students have 75% in the entire learning process:

First, at your schools, there is this unofficial saying or statement that states that ‘a student has to contribute 75% of his/her studies because the teacher only gives 25% to the student’s entire school studies’. I say this is unofficial statement because there’s no authority or recommendable proof on that. However, what we observe in our teaching is obvious. In most cases, teachers teach by helping, guiding and demonstrating to students so that these students can in turn use their time, knowledge and potentialities to explore more on what they have learnt. Thus, teachers should effectively use their 25% in helping students before they leave them with 75% as they demonstrate what they have learn and explore more about the lessons.

Second, the time spent by the teacher. The time spent by the teacher in the class is short compared to the time spent by a student as he/she consumes what has been delivered by the teacher. This is why we say there is another side of this statement where it may be true and it may works in some cases. The truth of this ‘unofficial statement’ is that when a teacher has taught his/her single period (40 mins) or double periods (80 mins), the students have to play their full part by listening, taking notes, doing class activities (individually, in pairs, or in groups), and doing home assignments. By doing so, a student is actually fulfilling his/her 75% of his/her whole learning process. As it may be observed in this opinion, student is the one who has a lot of works to do to complete the learning process. Teacher’s role is always crucial for academic growth of any student. This is why, the teacher has to apply his/her best knowledge in guiding a student to fully utilise this 75% of his/her learning.
