A: INFORMATION OF THE TOPIC:

1. Main Topic 1: LISTENING TO AND UNDERSTANDING SIMPLE TEXTS ABOUT A VARIETY OF EVENTS AND SITUATIONS.

B: HOW TO TEACH THE TOPIC:

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

The objective of this sub topic is to help students be able to write down what is read. It is a good activity although it is old method.

Dictation is old-fashioned, boring, and teacher-centred method of teaching and learning. In its simplest form, dictation refers to a person reading some text aloud so that the listener(s) can write down what is being said. Apart from being mostly teacher-centred, there are other methods that can make it more interesting and learner-centred.

The normal and old process of conducting dictation is done in the following ways;

A teacher to reads the whole text at a talking pace for the first time.
Then, students to write as the teacher read the text for the second time.
Finally, a teacher writes the correct version of the text on the board or provides copies to students for them to correct their mistakes.

But there are other learner-centred ways in which dictations can be done.

Here are some of these learner-centred activities:

-ACTIVITIES & GAMES TO FACILITATE A LESSON:

MAKING DICTATION MORE LEARNER-CENTRED?

In this method, teacher can use students as the 'dictators' and add the benefit and more focus on students' pronunciation and other activities.

A teacher can do this by following these activities below:

Activity 1: STUDENTS DICTATING TO OTHER STUDENTS.

First, cut the text up and distribute one line to each of the students. They then take turns dictating their sentence while the other students listen and write it down. Then give them a copy of the full text to compare with their own.

Activity 2: RUNNING TO THE BLACKBOARD.

In this game-like activity, a teacher can divide the class into pairs and ask them to choose one person to be the 'writer' and another to be the 'runner'. A teacher takes a text to be dictated and stick it at one end of the room or on the blackboard. The runners have to go to the text and return to their partners having memorised the first line of the text, which they dictate. They keep returning to the text until they have dictated the full text to their partner. The roles can be changed halfway through in order that the ‘writer’ becomes the ‘runner’ and the ‘runner’ becomes the ‘writer’. This can increase their participation in the process. Their text is then compared to a correct version and corrected. This activity requires only a short text.

6: CONNECTION: Beyond the Sub Topic. Dictation has numerous uses in the classroom. It involves little preparation, creativity and interest. When used imaginatively, dictation can be an effective tool for working on accuracy and fluency in all four skills. When some students read for others, they improve reading and speaking while others improve writing and listening.

While reading, speaking (pronunciation) is improved.
While writing, listening (pronunciation) is improved.

Also dictations can be composed with various contents to test the students’ ability in tested contents. For instance, a text can be about any tense or any word class in order to test students’ ability in such areas. The following text, for example, can be good option for testing students’ ability on mastering prepositions:

On 1^st January is New Year’s Day. On this day we celebrate the start of New Year. In many countries this day is very famous. At 11:59 pm of every 31 December becomes intense moment for everyone.

7: NOTE:

Dictations have various benefits to the teachers and students and various ways in which they can be done.

For the teachers, dictations:

Can be done with any level, depending on the text used
Can be graded for a multi-level class.
Require very little preparation and photocopying.
Give the students more listening and writing /spelling practice.
Save time. The class can be divided into two groups and the words/phrases dictated quickly with each group required to write down only half the words given.

For the students, dictations:

Can focus on both accuracy (form) as well as meaning.
Can develop all four skills - speaking and pronunciation can be developed if the students do the dictating rather than the teacher.
Give students the opportunity to notice features of pronunciation such as weak forms, linking and elision.
Dictation activities where students compare their version of the text to the original can increase their ability to notice aspects of the language which are sometimes overlooked, as well as mistakes which they commonly make. These might include common spelling errors, absence of articles or the third person ’s’, and the like.
The comparison also helps students to become better at identifying errors in their own written work.
