-ACTIVITIES & GAMES TO FACILITATE A LESSON:

Activity 1: READING AND LISTENING
Before you read.

Read this text to the students. Before you read you can tell them what the text is all about. As you read, tell them to generally pay attention to what you are reading. Supply the gap filling exercise or write it on the blackboard if you have no enough copies. After you have given them this exercise, tell them to fill in the spaces as they listen from you. As you read for the second time, keep your reading speed moderate. Then read for the last time, and collect their work of group them in pairs so that they can check their answers. Make sure before checking, you have collected their works so that they can't change anything.

Read the text like this:

I live at Magomeni village. The highway passes through our village. Our house is near this highway. Many accidents happen in this road. At least every week there is one accident. Many accidents happen during holidays like Christmas and New Year when people become many. I witnessed one accident. It was motorcycle accident. The motorcycles known as ‘BodaBoda’ were crossing the road. Suddenly, one lorry was moving fast. The brakes of one ‘bodaboda’ failed at the middle of the road. The lorry approached him and crashed him. It was not easy to recognize his body. I felt very sorry for him.

Now create Listening Gap fill. You can supply this to the students and let them fill as they listen to your reading.

I ____________ at Magomeni village. The highway passes ____________ our village. Our house is near this highway. __________ accidents happen in this road. At least every week there is one accident. Many accidents happen during holidays like Christmas and ___________ when people become many. I witnessed one accident. It was _____________ accident.

Activity 2: CORRECT THE SPELLING.

In this activity, some words in the same text you have been using has been misspelt deliberately. So, you can tell the students to correct the spellings as they listen or you give as reading and correcting spelling activity.

I live at Magomeni village. The highway passes sessap through our village. Our house is near this highway. Many accidents happen in this road. At least every week there is one accident. Many accidents happen ngidur holidays like Christmas and New Year when people become many. I witnessed one accident. It was motorcycle accident. The motorcycles nownk as ‘BodaBoda’ were crossing the road. Suddenly, one rrloy was moving fast. The brakes of one ‘bodaboda’ failed at the middle of the road. The lorry approached him and crashed him. It was not easy to recognize his yobd. I felt very sorry for him.

Activity 3: PREPARE THE QUESTIONS.

In this activity, form two groups and prepare the questions for each group. The questions should come from the text read in this lesson like that above. No group should see the questions of another group, and then let them ask each other as groups. You may form five questions for each group. As they answer, they will be listening to each other, and you as teachers you will have the time to check their understanding.

6: CONNECTION: Beyond the Sub topic. This sub topic primarily tests listening skills. But it also tests writing skills because students write correct spellings. It also tests the speaking skill as when they ask themselves questions, they practice speaking as well.
7: NOTE: It is important to engage students in the listening skills because it is the basic language skills for the students who learn Second language like English.
