In
literary context, an Introduction
include the definitions of the key words, elaboration
of the question, introducing the titles
and the writers, as well as the question sentence that leads to the
discussion of the points of the first text in the main body of an essay.
Most
literary essays have clear topic sentence.
For
example, in BLACK HERMIT, the
playwright may have portrayed the following role of women in this way:
Tool of pleasure. Tool is any object that can be used
to satisfy a certain need. In this play, the playwright has portrayed women as ones
who are used by men for pleasure. For example, Remi uses Jane for pleasure
because he knows he can’t marry her, and this is basically because he has a
wife already, Thoni.
This is a book or poem is introduced in the literary essay |
In this example, there is a topic sentence (Tool of pleasure); short definition of a topic sentence (Tool is any object that can be used to satisfy a certain need); connecting a topic sentence to the question/text (In this play, the playwright has portrayed women as ones who are used by men for pleasure); and giving example from the text (For example, Remi uses Jane for pleasure because he knows he can’t marry her, and this is basically because he has a wife already, Thoni)
The important parts of a topic sentence/point of in a literary essay |
It
is a tradition that a second book or poem is neither introduced in the body of
introduction nor in the body of a paragraph of a point. Instead a book or a
poem is introduced in the separate paragraph as you will see in the sample

Focus Question: What are the roles of
women portrayed in any two plays you have read under this course?
In literary context, roles may be
defined as the functions or various positions a certain character may perform
in a particular work of art. Various
playwrights portray roles of women in their works. By using BLACK
HERMIT by Ngugi wa Thiong’o and THE
LION AND THE JEWEL by Wole Soyinka the
following roles of women have been
portrayed:
In BLACK HERMIT, the playwright has portrayed the following roles of
women;
Tool
of pleasure. The playwright has
portrayed women as ones who are used by men for pleasure. For example, Remi uses Jane for pleasure because
he knows he can’t marry her, and this is basically because he has a wife
already, Thoni.
No decision making.
Women are also the ones who cannot decide on some
important issues in their families and societies. For instance, Remi decides not to give Thoni any
opportunity to decide about their marriage. Remi also decides on his own
without involving Jane in decision making.
In THE LION AND THE JEWEL, the playwright has also portrayed the
following roles of women in the society;
No decision making.
Playwright shows that this is obvious in this society
as men like Baroka decides everything in the family. For instance, it is Baroka who decides to pursue
Sidi as his wife to be. Baroka uses his power to influence his decisions over
his wives and his people as well.
Source of pleasure.
The playwright also portrays that women are used by men
for pleasure. For example, Baroka
sleeps with Sidi only for pleasure before Lakunle. This is obvious because
Baroka himself has many wives just for pleasure and pomposity.
Therefore, the women are portrayed through various ways which are
unacceptable in the modern societies because they contribute to inequalities
among human beings. Thus, we should call
upon several strategies like effective women empowering, gender balance, gender
equality to mention a few in order to attain full, equal, and responsible
members of the society.
