Build your Essay Paragraph with these 4 Easy Components!

A paragraph like this in the picture below is built by using four main components. These are the necessary requirements for the students and writers.

(Guiding Question: As we discuss these 4 requirements of a good essay paragraph, this is going to be the guiding question: What are the causes of corruption?)

These four (4) main parts/requirements of (point) paragraph in an essay are:

  1. Opening a sentence
What should be included?
This is the heading of the paragraph. It should be catchy topic sentence/key words, phrases or sentence. (Clear point, phrase, or sentence).
Number of sentence: 1.
Example from the Guiding question above, the opening word/point can be: Nepotism.

  1. Explanation
What criteria are considered?
Definition of a catchy topic sentence/point. This is the explanation of the word, phrase or sentence that has been introduced in the opening sentence of the paragraph. (Definition is not necessary in some questions and subjects).
Use of appropriate sentence starters and connectors.
Number of sentences: 1-2.

Example from the above guiding question above:
Nepotism is the act of favouring relatives by giving them privileges in offices and other jobs.

  1. Evidence/Example(s)
What should be included?
Evidence/examples (data/facts) that support the topic sentence and the explanation of the point.
Use appropriate sentence starters and connectors such as; for example, for instance, in other words, etc.
Number of sentences. 1-2.

Example from the guiding question above:
It is now common that several officers are nepotistic because they favour their relatives by putting them in various positions regardless of their questionable qualifications. This means that they consider relationships rather than people's working abilities.

  1. Conclusion
What should be included?
Suggestions/recommendations/way forwards.
Use appropriate sentence starters and connectors such as; in this sense, in this point of view/thus, hence, etc.to introduce the concluding sentence of a point paragraph.
Restate main idea and make connection as well as some recommendations.

Example from the guiding question above:
Thus, people should stop being nepotistic because this act brings underdevelopment to the individuals and the society at large.

THE FULL EXAMPLE OF A PARAGRAPH:
Nepotism is the act of favouring relatives by giving them privileges in offices and other jobs. These days some officers favour their relatives or friends by putting them in various positions regardless of their qualifications. Thus, people should stop this practice it brings underdevelopment to the individuals and the society at large.

Conclusion
An essay writing skill is a skill that should be improved through various writing exercises. The teacher should guide students should various writing drills even if it is to give them the task of writing a single paragraph. This single-paragraph task, for example, can give a student a chance to explore more and understand the requirements of a good paragraph rather than writing many meaningless paragraphs. The teacher can also benefit from this because he/she will have an ample room to study each student’s ability to write a good paragraph. The students can be given more writing tasks (like full essay writing tasks) after covering the good way of writing a good paragraph.
