TEACHER DEVELOPMENT CLUB #09: 3 Main Areas of Form Four English Topics you need to know


Introduction

English Language Syllabus for Ordinary Level Secondary School has various skills to test students. Most of these skills and sub skills are centered on four language skills which are:

These four language skills have been covered in all topics in a particular class. This article has compiled these topics into the specific groups of language skills. Teaching & Learning Contents of All Form Four English Topics  have been divided into three (3) main areas.
The following are three Grammatical Areas you need to know when teaching or learning Form Four English topics:

1.   FORM FOUR ENGLISH TOPICS 1 - 2 & 4: LISTENING, SPEAKING, COMPREHENSION, VOCABULARY BUILDING, PRONUNCIATION, PARTS OF SPEECH AND TENSES.
Topics 1 up to 2 & 4 deal with Listening, Speaking, comprehension, vocabulary building, pronunciation, parts of speech and tenses. In these skills, a teacher and students are expected to have more oral activities than other activities. Other language skills may be applied but listening and speaking should take the most of the spaces. In particular, students have to speak English and listen to various media sources like TV, Radio, etc. The following are all topics in this category:
Topic 1: EXPRESSING ONESELF
Topic 2: LISTENING FOR INFORMATION
·         Listening to instructions
·         Giving instructions
·         Dictations
Topic 4: SPEAKING USING APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE CONTENT AND STYLE
·         Speaking and giving advice

2.   FORM FOUR ENGLISH TOPICS 3: READING, PRONUNCIATION, VOCABULARY BUILDING, COMPREHENSION AND LITERARY INTEPRETATION (ANALYSIS)
Topic 3 deals with Reading, pronunciation, vocabulary building, comprehension and interpretation (analysis) skills. These skills require a teacher and students to do more reading. Students are guided to read more for comprehension, vocabulary building, good pronunciation, and appreciation of literary texts. All topics of this category can be found below:
Topic 3: READING LITERARY WORKS
·         Identifying themes
·         Interpreting poems

3.   FORM FOUR ENGLISH TOPICS 5 - 6: WRITING, SPELLING AND PUNCTUATION.
Topics 5 & 6 deal with writing, punctuation and spelling skills. In this category, students and a teacher are expected to be involved in more writing activities like letters, notes, etc. If students are engaged well in this category, they can be better writers of various texts. They can also be free of punctuation errors. The following are the topics in this category:
Topic 5: WRITING USING APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE CONTENT AND STYLE
·         Creative writing
·         Writing speeches
·         Delivering speeches
·         Writing Curriculum Vitae (CV)
Topic 6: WRITING APPLICATION LETTERS
Conclusion
The language skills mentioned above are just among of varieties of language skills a teacher can use to interact with his/her students. The skills and sub skills of English Language learning should thoroughly be applied by any teacher for the students to have smooth learning of language.
Within 194 or 195 teaching days in a year, the teacher should help students achieve the stipulated class competence, goals and objectives through applying various skills, sub skills and other interactive teaching and learning activities.
