BASELINE: FORM ONE ORIENTATION COURSE, 2019 INTRODUCTION TO THE COMMON GREETINGS FOR THE STUDENTS THEMSELVES

There are various ways children, pupils or students can greet each other. These are the greetings which are for themselves. These are the greetings they greet when they meet. These are not the greetings they use often when they meet adults.
Also check out The List of BASELINE TOPICS: Orientation Course for Form One Students.
The greetings for the children also are divided into Informal greetings and Formal greetings.

Hi there, what’s up?
Hi! Not much, how about you?
How’ve you been?
I’m fine, thanks. And you?
Hey John, long time no see!
Hi, I’m doing all right. And you?

FORMAL GREETINGS
1st PERSON GREETINGS
2nd PERSON RESPONSES
1st PERSON AGAIN
Hello, Mr. John.
Hello, how are you?

‘How are you’? is also used here.
Hello, Ms. John.
Thank you. And you?
Hello, Teacher John/Teacher John/Professor John
Fine. Thank you. How are you?
Hello. How are you?
Well, thank you. And you?
Hi, Madam Joyce.

Hi, Dr. John

Hello Doctor.

  • ‘How are you?’ when it is used by the first person, it is not always a questions about your health. It is just a part of greeting. And that’s why the second person can just say ‘Good’, ‘Fine’, or ‘All right’ in return.
  • When we use titles like Dr, Teacher, or Professor, we also don’t use Mr. and Ms. For example, you can’t say: ‘Hello Doctor Mr. John. You can say: ‘Hello Doctor John’ or ‘Hello Mr. John’.
  • People like handshakes. But handshakes sometimes are not necessary when greeting people.
