KOLEC Lesson 34: LITERARY WORK APPRECIATION MODEL



INTRODUCTION 

After studying The Theory of Literature or Introduction to Literature, the next step is usually the appreciation or analysis of the selected literary works. 

Thus, when analysing any literary work, consider following this literary appreciation model:


(1) BOOK DETAILS:

This part gives the important details of the book or literary work. They are important for reference. These book details are:

-Title of the book:

-Author's name:

-Setting of the book:

-Year of publication:

-Publisher:


(2) AUTHOR'S BACKGROUND 

This gives the background history of the author. It helps the reader to easily understand the views of the author. In most cases, history of the author is directly related to his/her works.


(3) INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK  

It is the summary of the book. The summary of the book gives you the general picture of what is in the book, and it can take few paragraphs.


(4) ANALYSIS OF FORM

It deals with the superstructure of the literary work. It includes the following elements: 

(i) Title 

(ii) Setting 

(iii) Plot 

(iv) Characters 

(v) Style of the play 

(vi) Language 


(5) ANALYSIS OF CONTENT

It deals with what is conveyed in the literary work. It includes the following elements: 

(i) Themes 

(ii) Conflict 

(iii) Message 

(iv) Lessons/Morals 

(v) Philosophy of the play 

(vi) Relevance of the play
