INTRODUCTION TO THE POEMS
The poems in this selection are simple and suitable
for Form I and II Secondary School Students. This selection has come out as
researched and personal observation on what kinds of poems Form One and Form
Two English Students should learn. This selection does not concur with any
Ministry of Education, Science and Technology directives or regulations.
However, the poems in this selection are suitable for students to learn and
begin their creative, and literary journey as far as literature for Secondary
Schools is concerned. Other selections of poems can be applied so long as they
meet the level of the learners and the contents. In this selection, the
following poems have been analysed:

WHAT A HUMAN BEING DOES

you want to educate yourself,
You
are not late!
If
you want to build a house
It
is possible!
If
you want a degree,
The
door is open!
If
you want to be a medical doctor,
Why
not!
If
you want to do business,
You
can!
If
others do,
Why
can’t you?
What
a human being does,
Don’t
say you can’t!
QUESTIONS
[1] Explain the meaning of the title of the
poem.
The title ‘WHAT A HUMAN BEING DOES’ means the actions
or behaviours of a human being or behaviours which are common to human beings.
[2] What is the poem about? Paraphrase a
poem in one paragraph.
The poem is about the behaviours of human beings
especially the behaviour of not giving up easily on the things they do as part
of their occupation, hobbies or talents.
[3] How many stanzas are in this poem?
The poem has seven (7) stanzas.
[4] How many verses per each stanza?
Each stanza in the poem has two (2) verses, hence the
poem has 14 lines or verses.
[5] Identify the issues/themes of the poem. The
poem has the following issues/themes:
Education. The poet insists on education. For example: “If you
want to educate yourself,
You
are not late!”
Trade/business. The poet advises people to do business for their own
better life.
Occupations. The poem also advises people to participate in
various fields, careers or occupations like construction and medical practice.
Advice.
The poet advises
people not to give up on things easily because if others do then everyone can
try to do it.
