GENERAL INTRODUCTION

Stating Directions is the sub topic that aims to help students to be able to give and ask for directions as well as using four Points of the Compass or Cardinal points in showing different directions.

In our daily life, we give and ask for various directions. And in another way, we use more advanced ways by applying four or more points of compass directions. With help of real environments, maps and the globe we locate four or more points at the same time.

In this Part 2 of the Sub Topic, the aspect of Giving and Asking for Directions using Four Points of the Compass will be covered.

-ACTIVITIES & GAMES TO FACILITATE A LESSON:

Activity 1: BRAINSTORM WITH STUDENTS ON THE FOUR POINTS OF COMPASS AND SOME VOCABULARY.

It is always a good idea to familiarize students with the preliminary areas about the topic. In this lesson, students will learn how to give directions to another person when they ask you for directions on how to go somewhere. To make the lesson more understandable, as a teacher you will have to brainstorm and discuss with the students on the meaning, spelling, and correct pronunciation of the four pints of compass directions. If there are any teaching aids, they can be displayed here but with caution not to distract students or not having impact on the lesson. If it does not fit, it is better to display it later.

Four Points of the Compass or Cardinal Points

Also the teacher can introduce students to the various vocabulary items used such as:

North, East, West, South, in the West, to the East,

Activity 2: CLASSROOM SETTINGS AND SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTS.

The same settings used in the previously in Giving and Asking for Directions can be used again but this time with the use of Four Points of the Compass; that is, North, East, West, and South respectively. In this aspect, students can be guided to do the following exercises:

(1) To state various positions of different things using guiding questions. These guiding questions may be:

From Point B, Where is the Post Office?
When you are at Boys’ Toilet, where do you see Laboratory?
Where is Library when you stand at Assembly Area?

(2) To read and write in order to write the stated positions. For example, from the sentences above, students can practice writing the following sentences:

From Point B, the Post Office is at the North.
The Boys’ Toilet is in the West of the Library.
Library is in the East.

NOTE: Each drawn diagram or map should have a Compass sign at the top right corner of the diagram or map. This will help in the location of various points.

Activity 3: USE OF MAPS AND GLOBES.

As a teacher, you can use a map like class map, school map, region map, or even country map. Then you may guide students how to locate different places in the particular map by using four points of compass.

As a teacher, guide them to form pairs or groups.
Allow them to read the given diagrams, maps or globes.
As they read, correct them where necessary.
If time allows, you may use various objects and places to make students more interactive with various objects and places.

EXERCISEE/ASSIGNMENT

At the end of the lesson, you may have a lot of activities, exercises, and assignments to give the students. Here are some suggestions:

You may give them questions that relate to the diagrams or maps you have given them. Or let them draw your simple diagram, then ask them questions from that particular diagram or map.

Question: Assume you are at School Football ground, state the locations of the following points by using compass: The sentences may vary, but the sample sentences should be like these ones: The Girls’ toilets are in the West. Or The Girls’ toilets are located in the West of the Football ground, and many more variations that suit the purposes:

(i) Administration Block.

(ii) Netball pitch.

(iii) Staff Office.

(iv) Classes.

(v) Library.

6: CONNECTION: Beyond the Sub Topic. This sub topic has a lot of extra-aspects to cover. Apart from helping students to know how to locate various places when they give and ask for directions, there also other activities they can get interacted with such as:

Speaking,

Listening,

Writing,and

Map reading.

7: NOTE: There are some important tips when teaching this sub topic. The following should be emphasized to the students.

Speak slowly so the other person can understand.

Speak slowly so the other person can write down the instructions if talking on the phone.

When speaking with someone, use your hands to demonstrate what you mean, left, right, or straight on.

Always try and use the word "please" when you are asking someone for directions. It's polite, and people are more likely to help you!
